P1/2 Having fun building Robots
As part of their work on ‘Toys’ the children were given the challenge to work with a partner to design and build a ‘junk’ model Robot.
They were set three criteria:
- The robot must have a name.
- It must have a moving part.
- It has to have a purpose/ do a job.
The children were very busy and set to work in their pairs. Firstly they drew a picture on their own of what they wanted the robot to look like. They learned to put labels on their picture to make it a diagram. Then they shared what they had designed and used the best ideas from each to design a ‘super’ robot.
They set to work on building their robots. They selected the materials they needed and began sticking. It was a tricky job deciding whether to use sellotape, masking tape, double sided tape, glue or a paper fastener. The children were very busy and there was lots of discussion as they built. Once the glue was dry they set to work on choosing which colours they would use and on painting. They added the final touches before putting their work on display.
The children enjoyed showing their work to the class and we checked that the three criteria had been met. We had lots of fun!
