Recently we had a visitor to school who works for NHS Grampian. She was a nutritionist and her job is to teach people about the imortance of eating healthily. She visited for the whole day and spoke to each class. Parents were invited to school to h ear the presentation and a few were able to come along to join in. The pupils enjoyed their session and some valuable lessons were learnt!
Here is a brief report from two pupils about the visit.
On Thursday the 22nd of February a lady called Mrs Gascoigne came in to tell the whole school about healthy eating. She asked us what our favourite food was and how to balance our food types for good health. She had a mat that told us what % of each food type we should eat during the day. Fruit and vegetables should be 33% of the day’s food. Bread, cereal and potatoes should also be 33%. Fats and sugar were 10%. Milk and dairy was 12% and meat and fish was also 12%.
Protein helps you grow and helps repair your body. You need at least ¾ portions of milk, yogurt and cheese per day. Vegetarians should eat quorn, beans, eggs and lentils to keep healthy. Vegetarians should eat vitamins and minerals to help heal their body.
To provide energy you need plenty of calories in your food such as potatoes, rice, bread, pasta and cereals. These are the snacks you can eat – cereal bars, fruit bars, fruit flakes, popcorn, pancakes and scones.
In a can of coke and a mars bar there are 16 spoonfuls of sugar!
You should drink 3 to 4 bottles of water per day.
