Pupils in P5 & P6 had a visit by one of Grampian's Fire Safety Officers on Thursday 25th January. This is part of a planned programme for pupils in P5 & 6 across the authority and plays an important part in our Health Educatino Programme. Two pupils from Class 6 wrote this report.
Fire Safety Visit by Officer Gary Collins
On Thursday we had a talk on fire safety. The man’s name was Gary. e used to be a working fireman but now he is an extremely skilled instructor who does lots of talks to schools in the Aberdeenshire area.
He took in some smoke alarms and he told us to test our smoke alarms at home because some smoke alarms last 10 years and some a year. He said that we had to clean it when we changed the battery.
He showed us a video of people who acted in a play and they set their house on fire. He told us to make an escape plan of our house and go through the procedures that it says on the instructions. There was other stuff like arranging a meeting place and he said you don’t leave each other and if you have a phone in that room cover the door then shout out the window “fire, fire.”
Then in a cartoon the man smelt a fire and the man was going to go down the stairs and the woman took him by the jumper and said “No! No get in a bedroom and cover the doors with blankets and other soft stuff. The man jumped out and got hurt and the woman passed the children down and the mum squashed him when she jumped.
Gary said that we had to do home work and we all said “Oh no!” But it was good home work - we have to test the fire alarms and make a plan of our houses and mark an escape route.
