Pr 2/3 Outdoor Learning

Pr 2/3 have been making use of the good weather to work outside in the playground on some of their numeracy tasks.

A number of activities were set up and the children worked in groups to carry out the tasks.
Some of the tasks they were set to do had them…..

-       Building a wall and finding out if the wall would be even or odd?

-       Placing numbers on an odd and even line – making sure they add the numbers to the correct line.

-       Matching the number and number word and making that number using a ‘Tens Frame’.

-       Shape Sort – according to whether it had odd or even numbers of edges.

 They have also been making clay pots and have been painting them.

 The class has had a visit to the local library already this term.

 During Golden Time they made models with the construction materials.

 The class have been working hard and they really enjoyed working round the different stations outside.

Primary 1/2 - Busy, Busy, Busy!

We have had a busy first term in p1/2! 

The boys and girls in p1 have been enjoying active literacy activities and learning the letter sounds and common words.  They have also been learning about numbers through the fun number zoo stories.

The children in p2 have been working hard on their literacy and numeracy activities too! They have been enjoying their new reading books!  The boys and girls in p2 have been very kind to the p1 children, helping them to become familiar with the class routines.

Each Friday we enjoy going to assembly with the whole school.  On Friday 26th September, we enjoyed Jamesie's assembly! Here we are enthusiastically taking part in a song he taught us! We sat very smartly and listened to the story Jamesie told us about being grateful! 

Friday 3rd october: World Smile Day

Friday 3rd October is WORLD SMILE DAY. We celebrate this every year as their aim is simple.....Do an act of kindness- Help one person smile!

We all know that a smile makes the day brighter and we know that the world could do with more smiles! This years marks the 50th year since Harvey Ball created the 'Smiley' which is recognised and used all round the world!

This year...our challenge to the staff and pupils is to submit a SELFIE of themselves smiling! We have had quite a few in already and look forward to getting more! Email them in and they will be displayed on our large TV on World Smile Day!

But...in the meantime......DO AN ACT OF KINDNESS and HELP ONE PERSON SMILE!

 

Great Success: Macmillan Coffee Morning

 

 

We are delighted to announce once again that the pupils and families of Strichen School have excelled themselves when it comes to supporting charities! On Friday 26th September we held our SEVENTH Macmillan 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning'  and to date we have raised £1186.

The event was organised by the staff and pupils of Pr 4/5, Pr 5/6 and Pr 6/7. They worked together to plan out the morning event and devised a range of activites and tasks for the visitors to work on as well as running a raffle, baking for the coffee mornig and running all the different activities.

This even has grown over the years and is now firmly established on the schol calendar. The staff and pupils can be very proud of their achievements and we are sure they can be assured that the money they raised will be put to very good use by The Macmillan Cancer Support Charity to further their work.

We also need to thank the volunteers who came in to help on the mornng - parents and other people from the community assisted the children and were erqually responsible for ensuring the success of the event.

And finally we need to thank everyone who came along and supported the event. We had well over 100 people attend the event and they enjoyed going round the activities and stalls and enjoyed a cuppa with a very extensive array of home bakes and cakes! Without their generous donations we would not have been able to make such a great amount!

Referendum Excitement

Today was Referendum Day and Strichen School, was very busy.

Pupils from Primary 6/7 had researched, planned and organised our own Referendum Election. They had drawn up a list of all the voters, had made ballot papers for both the younger and older pupils and had set up an excelent polling station in the GP Room.

At a special assembly they explained to all the pupils how an election is organised and then over the morning took each class in turn for them to experience voting in secret at the polling booths!

They did an excellent job and the end result was a very narrow victory for the YES vote.

in the morning before school the pupils took a great deal of interest in what was going on at The Ritchie Hall. The place was very busy and there were voters, a large group of media people and police officers in attendance.

The Police came over and spoke to the children and explained Mr Salmond, The First Minister, was due very soon to vote. After the classes were in the Pr 6/7 and Pr5/6 clasases went out to observe from the playground.

We were all very surprised when The First Minister on his way away came over to get his photograph taken beside the pupils.

The pupils were viewing so that they could say in years to come that they observed a special moment in the history of Scotland by watching The First Minister leave after casting his vote.

The children were very excited and we are sure they will remember this for along time.

Pr 5/6 - Patterns!

 

Primary 5/6 have been learning about patterns in class although have lately discovered patterns can be made everywhere, not just on paper!

The challenge was set for partners to make 2 patterns out of materials around the secret garden.  They then had to get their partner group to try to work out the rules for their pattern.

Jamie-Lee and Tyler tried their best to catch us out but we soon realised their pattern was going up in stones of 10 starting from 20, and they had a stick and berry separating between the stones.

We had a lot of fun!

Pr 6/7 : A busy start to the year!

Primary 6/7 have been very busy so far this year.

Not only have they been working hard in their own class but they have been helping in Primary 1/2 as well.

Primary 7's have been taking their roles as buddies to the Primary 1's very seriously and supporting the new additions to Strichen School by showing them around, helping them get ready for the start of the day, playtimes, lunch times and home times and being involved in a weekly buddying activity. So far they have enjoyed paired reading and arts and crafts.

Although they have to wait until next year to be buddies, the Primary 6's have been very helpful in taking part in the same activities with the Primary 2's. They are also involved in organising and running play ground games for the younger stages classes at break and lunch times. Everyone is having great fun working together!

Primary 7 House Captains

We have a small group of Primary 7 pupils this session - although they are very enthusiastic to be involved in school events.

As there are only 11 pupils we have decided as a group that ALL the pupils will be House Captains for their House Teams. This will mean they are all involved in evcents and activities.

The House Captains are:

BROWN:        Chloe Taylor     and    Amelia Paterson

COUTTS:       Elisa Gibb,    Teigan Allan      and    Erin Ross

GORDON:      Aneila Dalgarno     and   Georgia McAdam 

YOUNG:        Callum Taylor,    Ruth Taylor,     Nadine Allan       and Adam Fowlie

This year the House Captains will also take on a range of responsibilites each term. These will include:

- Being Buddies to the new Primary 1 pupils

- Organising the Playground Squad to help the younger pupils with games and activities.

- Ensuring the hall resources, the laptop trolley and library are kept tidy and in order.

A new venture this year will be the Strichen School Community Cafe. This will be open on a monthly basis from 2.00 - 3.00pm and will be open to anyone from the village who wants to come along and join us for a coffee and a chat! More details to folow.

Strichen School Fund Raising Acknowldged!

We are delighted that some of the great fundraising done by pupils, staff and families of Strichen School has been recognised by Marie Curie Cancer Care on their Facebook page!

We are proud of our fund raising efforts and we hope that this year will be another successful one in supporting different groups in our community.
