Robbie Burns Visits Strichen School

We were very lucky to have a very special visitor to school this week - Robbie Burns! As part of our 'Homecoming' work this year a visit had been arranged by a man who puts on a special show all about the life of Robbie Burns. What makes it different is that he actually dresses up as Robbie Burns and tells the audience all about his life and his work. Primary 7 produced this record of his visit!

Visit to Pr 7 by Guitar Instructor

Primary 7 had a visit last week from one of the authority's guitar instructors to give them a demonstration about learnign to play the guitar. They really enjoyed the visit and were amazed at what they heard from Mr Holroyd. Jason has produced a powerpoint presentation about the visit. We hope that you enjoy it.

Comic Relief

Strichen School pupils managed to raise over £300 for Comic Relief. The pupils dressed as they pleased.....as long as they had a red nose and wore something red. The pupil council organised activities for the morning for the pupils to come along and join in with. In the afternoon wehad a 'hunt the red nose' competition round the school grounds. Classes were paired up and the pupilsworked in pairs to go round the school grounds to find one of the 10 red noses hidden there.  Everyone had great fun and we were delighted that once again the pupils and their families helped to donate such a great amount to a worthwhile charity. Thanksa to everyone for your help.

World War II - Primary 6

Class 5 are studying WW2 this term.

You may have heard about some of the things we have been finding out about, and the activities we have been taking part in.

Over the weeks we have been gathering various items from war time. Class 3 saw some of the items and were so interested, they asked to come and have a look.

So………………Class 5 decided to make it really fun for them!

We had 4 activities organised for Class 3 to take part in.

     1.      Display Cabinets –

    Mintlaw Museum provided Class 5 with 2 large display cabinets.

One of our groups acted as tour guides and showed the items in the Cabinets and spoke to Class 3 about a selected few. They then were able to complete their own ‘artefact’ sheet on their favourite item.

 

2. Evacuation!

As Class 5 enjoyed their mock Evacuation so much, they decided to let Class 3 experience some of the things they did. So they got to make their own evacuee labels, and then Class 5 helped them to think about and choose some items they would take with them if they were to be evacuated.

 

3. Class 5 have set up their own mini display cabinet in their classroom, so they wanted to share the items they have gathered with Class 3. The children got to try on some of the items, and were able to have a turn on an authentic air raid siren – This was a great favourite!

   4. Finally, one of the groups in class 5 had made their own matching game on the interactive SMART board. The children in Class 3 had to match the meanings to some WW2 words and phrases, this was really tricky! They were then able to have a turn of some authentic WW2 phones that would have been used to help fire fighters during emergencies. This was another favourite activity!

Class 3 had a great time learning about the things Class 5 have been up to, and seeing all the interesting war time items.

Class 5 also had a great time preparing the activities and getting to work with other children in the school, and pass on some of the things they had been learning.

Photos from round the school - February 2009.

A new album of photos of some of the children's art work is available to view in the 'Photo Album' section of the blog on the left side of the screen. Please look for the album called '08/09 Art Gallery'. Among the photos you will see some of Class 3's new designs for a shield for Strichen, Class 1's excellent pieces of hand work of lighthouses, Class 5's art work showing Spitfires flying across the White CLiffs of Dover, and a selection work from the nursery.

Primary 6 Pupils Evacuated from School!

THe pupils and staff from Primary 6 were dramatically evacuated from Strichen School today after the school bells were sounded at 9.15 in the morning . As part of their project on World War II they had been finding out all about 'Evacuation' and we thought it would be a great idea to let the children experience what it might feel like to be told they were going to be evacuated from Strichen to somewhere safer! The pupils had produced gas mask boxes and 'evacuation bags' which they had taken home to pack as if they were to be evacuated.

The pupils then went for a short walk round the village before ending up at The British Legion Hall where they were to wait to be chosen by their new family! After Miss CLark took a roll call the children were joined by five volunteers who had come along especially to tell the children about their experiences during the war when they were younger.

The children heard a wide range of stories from our visitors and asked a lot of questions about what life was like in the 1940's. Having had a short time with each visitor the children had juice and a biscuit before some more locals arrived to choose their new 'children'.

We would like to thank our visitors for sharing such interesting stories with the children and the British Legion for generously allowing us to use their hall for holding the event.
