Welcome to Day 3’s blog entry! Wednesday was a good day and we were all very busy with some real physical challenges!
Our day started as ever with breakfast and lunch making! The children are into the swing of how things work now and just got on with it – despite a few moans and groans about being tired and wanting to go back to bed! (The staff sympathised but we rallied and told them we had a fun day ahead!)
In the morning the three groups were split into two groups with half going to the ski slope and half going Canadian Canoeing!
The canoers were well wrapped up in a number of layers but again they got an extra jacket at the boathouse along with their lifejacket. The were given paddles that were appropriate for their size and went round to the quiet area of the loch and played some games and were given a crash course in Canadian canoeing! By 10.20 they finally made it into the water! They spent some time in the sheltered area finding out how to paddle, steer and back paddle in case they were going to crash into another canoe. Once their confidence was up they set off down the loch towards Osprey Island! However, one canoe managed to capsize twice before setting off down the loch! That certainly woke them up well and truly!
The other group went off to snowboard! They went into the boathouse and were kitted out with boots and then a snowboard! They walked across like astronauts to the ski slope and slowly, but surely they built up their confidence as they moved higher up the slope!
However, one poor girl from Longside had a fall on one of her runs! She had managed to ski down the slope and had managed a great jump on her board but landed a little awkwardly! She hurt her knee and it was obvious that it was really sore! She was very brave and we got her into the boathouse where staff checked her over before getting the lead instructor to have a look at her! As a precaution Miss Ingram and Mr Jenkins took her off to Aviemore to the health centre! She was seen by a doctor and had her leg strapped up. However, he suggested we come back in the afternoon to get an x-ray just to make sure everything was ok!
We drove back to Loch Insh and had our lunch while watching the next group set off to the ski slope for their session!
The other group was off canoeing and by this time the weather had improved and it was great conditions for paddling up and down the loch.
So at 3.00pm we set off to Aviemore with TWO pupils! One had hurt her hand the day before and so we thought we should get her checked out also as it was still sore! So we had two getting x-rays as the rest snowboarded and canoed!
However, after a long seat before and after the x-rays we made it back to Loch Insh just in time for tea! The girls are both fine and have been real troopers!
After tea they all took part in the egg drop challenge! They were all given money and had to take part in an auction to buy materials to make a contraption that would protect an egg when dropped from 6 feet! After buying a wide range of goods from string, paper, card and a variety of other goodies they set about making their design. At the end of the session the instructors dropped the eggs, safely protected in their protective casing, off the balcony! However, despite their hard work and ingenuity none of the eggs managed to survive the perilous drop from the balcony!
After their juice and biscuit each room were set the challenge of creating a short ‘infomercial’ about Loch Insh! After 25 minutes to plan and prepare it we recorded each one and you can listen to their work on the podcast which has been uploaded with this entry.
We hope you enjoy listening to the podcast and looking at the photos from today!

It’s amazing how quickly the day goes past when you are away. It’s now 10.30pm and the children are all in bed or just having their lights put out! We certainly have had ‘four seasons in one day’ today! We have had bright sunshine, strong wind, rain, hail, snow and everything else in between. In fact you could stand and look up at the sky and on one side the sky was blue and the sun was shining and on the other it was grey, foggy and the rain or snow was falling!
However, that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the children or the staff and we had another busy day.
We went for breakfast at 8.30am after getting the children up at 7.30am. We went down the steps to the boathouse for the first time of the day and half of them had their breakfast while the others ‘created’ their sandwich creations! They had a wide range of choices for breakfast – cereal, fruit, yogurt, toast, bacon, beans, haggis (yes – haggis!!) and fruit juice.
Soon we were ready for our first activity of the day. Two groups were going sailing while Mrs Stephen’s group headed off to the archery range. The sailors got extra waterproofs and jackets from the instructors to make sure they all had plenty of layers on before adding a life jacket on top! They made their way to the jetty and each group was taken out in a powerboat to their sailing boat. The winds were too high to go out in the small boats and so they went out in three larger groups in the bigger boats. They had great fun but it was VERY COLD and they were all glad to make it back on to dry land two hours after setting off.
Mrs Stephen’s group developed their archery skills and they could all see that with some hard work and effort they could make steady improvements with practice. I think it is fair to say that all three groups enjoyed their archery session.
We headed back up the hill for lunch and we decided it was best to have our lunch in our chalets or rooms so that we got a bit of peace and quiet instead of being in the big group.
The afternoon saw Mrs Stephen’s group head off for walk along the loch and into the wooded area beyond the loch. We saw a variety of different wildlife including a rather angry looking bull and a very friendly Shetland pony! Everyone completed the walk but some had to spend some time waiting for the stragglers to catch up!
The other two groups entered the wooded area next to the loch to take part in a variety of problem solving activities and they faced a series of challenges to test their skill, the trust of their friends and how to work as part of a team to complete a task! The blindfolded trail through the woods certainly meant that they had to trust the person in front of them as they were led through a trail all blindfolded and holding on top the person in front!
Tea was a BBQ – one of two during the week. However, due to the continuing snow flurries we were in the boathouse to eat which I think everyone was pleased about. We had soup, burgers or veggie kebabs, baked potatoes and salad rounded off with a choc ice! As if we were not cold enough!!
Our evening activity saw all three groups venture on to the shinty pitch for games! Half the group played rounders while the other half were introduced to shinty before swapping over half way through. The thought of our P7’s running about with shinty sticks was not what I would have chosen as a first choice but away they went anyway!
The rounders was great fun and ended up as a real competitive pair of matches between Miss McFarlane’s and Mr Jenkins’ teams! I am not going to say who won as Miss McFarlane might get upset!
So after 90 minutes of playing games in the fading light and in rain, snow and sunshine we all headed back to base for some juice before taking part in our last activity for the night. The children were split into four groups and they were set the challenge of creating a comic strip of their trip so far. Two groups worked in the TV room while two groups worked in one of the chalets and they worked well together to create their booklet in only 45 minutes!
We finished off the day by going over the plans for tomorrow! Each group will be Canadian Canoeing and Snow Boarding at some point during the day. This will be a physically hard day and we hope we can get a good nights sleep tonight.
Anyway, we can hope for a better day of weather tomorrow but we wont let it spoil our day.
We hope that you enjoy looking at the photo slideshow below.

Morning! Wet and cold today! Oh joy!!! As we say to the kids...it's character building!
Well, that’s day 1 done and dusted! The children are all in bed…..early at 10.30 and seem quite tired after their first day!
The journey up was fine and the weather was nice all the way up. The bus had a short toilet stop in Aberlour and made it to Loch Insh just after midday. Once we were shown where all our accommodation was we got the children off the bus and into their rooms with their cases. We then went straight up to our ‘meeting area’ for lunch and our welcome talk by one of the senior instructors.
The afternoon started with two groups doing archery and one group out sailing. Miss McFarlane’s and Miss Ingram’s groups went to the archery range while Mrs Stephen’s group ventured out on the loch to go sailing.
The two archery groups were soon up and shooting after a safety and technique demonstration from the instructors. We seem to have a few budding Robin Hoods in our group! Archery is a very technical and skilled sport and the children were really challenging themselves each time they went up to shoot their three arrows. We played a variety of games and ended up with a competition to see who could burst the balloons on their target first! Archery is not the most active of sports but requires a high degree of concentration and technique to do well. The children all worked hard and they all regularly hit the target which is no mean feat for those who have never tried it before.
Mrs Stephen’s group went out on the loch in two of the larger boats as it was too windy to put them out on the water in individual boats. So they spent their session sailing up and down the loch learning all about the skills required to steer, set up the sails and how to use the wind to get them about! No one fell in and they had a great time.
We managed to get some time in the play park before tea in the boathouse. They had soup and bread rolls, a choice of macaroni cheese, shepherds pie or baked tatties and either fruit, yogurt or apple crumble and custard! So there was certainly something there to meet most tastes!
The evening was spent orienteering! In teams of two or three they had a map of the site and had to find the 10 hidden markers in the quickest time! After an hour of running, or walking in some cases, about in the drizzle the team to find all the markers in the quickest time was……. the female staff!!!!
After our evening activity we had juice and a biscuit before taking part in some group discussions about the day. They were all quite happy to go to their rooms and get ready for bed and unpacked! All is quiet now and hopefully will be till their wake up call at 7.30am!
We hope that the weather improves a little for tomorrow. Two groups are sailing in the morning while the third will be at the archery range. The afternoon sees two groups doing problem solving and one group off on a walk!
Check out the slide show below for some pictures from the day.

Friday dawned and it was a struggle to get up – but we knew we had to be up early so we could get packed up and be out of our rooms before our final activity of the week. The children in most rooms were difficult to rouse but once up they were soon into action! The morning was very bright and we made our way down the steps for what we thought was the last time. Breakfast followed the normal pattern with children having breakfast, making their sandwiches and someone uploading the blog and photos from Thursday. A few of the instructors were there having their breakfast and making their lunch also.
Today’s activity was called ‘The Great Egg Race’. It was going to take place in the hall at the accommodation and it was a shame that it was such a nice morning to be inside. The instructors came and set up the activity in the hall. They had a collection of junk, bits and bobs and a huge pile of ‘Bank of Insh’ money. The children sorted themselves into small groups and they were set the challenge of constructing a ‘contraption’ that would allow a hard boiled egg to travel the greatest distance across the floor of the hall. The children were given a sum of money each and the junk and bits and bobs were auctioned off to the highest bid fro the groups. The items they felt would be most useful in their task went for a higher sum than some of the more mundane items such as newspaper, elastic bands or plastic cups! The children then had a set time to construct their device to propel the egg the greatest distance. The instructors helped and after their time was up each team had the opportunity to come up and test out their idea. This was repeated three times and soon they had discovered the group with the best idea!
After tidying up from this activity it was time for lunch as the bus would arrive soon. As it was so nice we decided to go down the steps one more time to the beach for our lunch and to let the children loose in the adventure playground. We moved all the cases over to where the bus was now parked and the driver would collect us from the boathouse at 12.30pm.
The children had great fun in the park and then we went to the beach to have our lunch. The bus arrived and sadly they all climbed aboard ready for the journey home. Some of the children even asked if we had to go home! Even the staff felt the same as the week had been so good.
So, the children had walked, sailed, kayaked, canoed, skied, snow boarded, cycled, problem solved, arched, played games and danced at the disco and had had GREAT FUN!

Well, amazingly we have been here for four days and have one activity left tomorrow morning. We got up again today to another bright, sunny morning and had some fun waking the children up. Almost all were still fast asleep when we went round their rooms and you had to speak quite loudly before they stirred into life! I wonder what it will be like tomorrow morning?
For the umpteenth time we set off down the path to the boathouse and had another filling breakfast and they made their packed lunches. A few of the instructors join us at meal times and they had their breakfast with the children and made their packed lunch as well.
The first session today was unusual as all three groups were going out on the water. In fact we were to find out later that we were the first group to venture out on to the water at this time of year and the instructors had been impressed with how the three groups had approached the water activities with such enthusiasm, I was all psyched up to go on the Canadian canoes when I found out that two children were not taking part in the water activities and someone would need to remain with them at the boathouse! As I did not want to deprive the other staff of their opportunities to take part with their group I said I would stay behind. Andy Freshwater, the events organiser, had been taking video on and off all week and asked if he could get some our video and photos also to add to the presentation they do at night during the disco. So I was able to spend some time selecting some good clips and some good photos for him to use. (I was also able to have a lovely latte and home bake while we waited!! …….ssshhh!)
Mrs Mitchell’s group were going Canadian Canoeing. Neil, the senior instructor, took them and got them organised with paddles and life jackets before going over the basics required to get them started in the canoes. The children set off in two’s or three’s, along with Mrs Mitchell and set off down to the lagoon area to have some great fun. However, two of the pupils became the first to fall in the water after losing their balance – but we did not catch the event on camera which was a real shame.
Mrs Stephen’s group were going kayaking. They too got their paddles and life jackets and set off to the kayaking area and spent some time learning about all the different ways of using the paddles to power the kayak, turn it round and even how to make it go backwards! They then set about unloading the kayaks from the storage rack and lining them up along the beach ready for the off. They too would spend the next while kayaking round a very secluded part of the loch until the instructor was confident that they could venture out further. They soon set off up the loch and you could see the kayaks and helmets bobbing about in the water away in the distance.
Miss Ingram’s group were going sailing. Once they were in their lifejackets they made their way round to the jetty with Andy and Sophie and Jacks. Half the group got into one of the motor launches and they were taken out to the sailing boat they would be using. The launch then returned and took the others out to their boat. Andy then spent some time following the boats with his video camera getting some amazing action shots of them on the loch which we saw at the disco. Hopefully you will get the chance to see them too soon.
The pupils from Longside had a surprise at lunchtime when Mrs Simpson, their Head Teacher, arrived to see how they were getting on and to see what they were up to. After lunch we made our way back to the boathouse and this time all the groups were doing land based activities.
Mrs Mitchell’s group were learning how to be archers and then went into the woods to take part in some problem solving activities.
Mrs Stephen’s group were all booted up for some snowboarding and were looking forward to learning how to do some cool moves on the ski slope! However, one girl did stave her finger while doing an acrobatic fall!
Miss Ingram’s group were going cycling and I was about to take part in my third mountain biking trip. The bikes are great fun the children are challenged to cope with on road and off road cycling. However, we did have a bumpy ride and again I ended up returning to base with one who was not feeling well before chasing the group to catch them up again. No sooner had I managed this when one of the girls decided to see what it would be like to fall off her bike on the riverside. I had been filming them as they approached and I made my way back to see her and the second instructor arrived from behind to see if she was ok. After the initial shock wore off she was alright but had staved her wrist and thumb. One instructor and Miss Ingram walked back with her to a house that was nearby and they radioed to the centre to get someone to come out and collect her, Miss Ingram and their bikes while the rest of the group continued. Once started again we got some great shots of them cycling through a stream that crossed our route. We made it back a little later than normal and were met by our injured group member in a sling. She was concerned that the sling was not the right t colour to go with her disco outfit!
Anyway, we had had another great day and the instructors had done another fine job of making sure that everyone gave everything a go and that they got the most out of it.
Tea tonight was an outdoor barbeque!! This was the first of the season for them and we sat in the lovely sunlight as the smell of the fire and cooking food made us all hungry. We had soup followed by chicken, hot dogs, baked tatties and a variety of salad. The instructors all joined us and Andy, Johnny and Mr and Mrs Freshwater also joined us. It was a great way to finish the day.
Before going back to pack and get ready for the disco we went down to the beach and took photos of each of the groups and one of the group as a memento.
After a short period of time doing their diary they went off to their rooms to pack as much as they could and to get ready for the disco. We reminded them to keep dirty and clean clothes apart …. so here’s hoping they actually did it!
Before we knew it it was 8pm and it was disco time. Johnny and some of the other instructors arrived and soon had the children enjoying themselves .After the disco they handed out certificates to the children and staff for successfully completing the activities and then showed a twenty five minute video of the week from their own and our video. It really was amazing to see how much they had done and how much fun everyone had had. We saw video of all the groups and snippets of all the activities we had done. The children loved seeing themselves involved in a variety of situations and it was a great way of rounding off the week. We received a copy of the DVD and hopefully you will get the opportunity of seeing it next term along with more footage of the trip.
So, we are nearly at the end of the trip and we are looking forward to coming home tomorrow, although it will be sad to leave after having had such a great time. The pupils have represented themselves and the schools very well and have been a joy to take away. They have made some new friends (possibly boy/girlfriends???) and have all mixed well together.
I would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Mitchell, Miss Ingram and Mrs Stephen who have worked so hard over the week with the pupils. They have made sure they are at the right place at the right time, that they have all the clothes and equipment they need and have had great fun with the children while being there for them if they were not feeling well or were feeling tired or homesick. They will be looking forward to their holidays as much as the children. However, I hope that they and the children will look back with fond memories to the time they spent at Loch Insh and that perhaps the children will be keen to pursue some of the activities at some point in the future.
Anyway, we hope that the blog, the podcasts and photos have allowed you to have a little more insight into the trip and that you have enjoyed logging on to see what they have been up to.
Thanks.

We have been lucky so far with the weather this week. Today was a lovely day and conditions were ideal for us. This was especially so for the two groups who were on the water in the morning. Mrs Mitchell’s group were out kayaking and they managed to explore a lot of the loch during the session. They started off by getting their life jackets and paddles and do some exercises to accustom themselves to using the paddles. They then got their kayaks from the rack and after some pushing and clambering on to the kayak at the waterside they were off. Within a few minutes they were confidently kayaking round the sheltered bay where they were working. The instructor got them altogether and went over a few points before they took off along the loch. Before long they were out of sight and I headed off to see what the Canadian canoeists were up to.
Miss Ingram’s group were in the Canadian canoes. These were the canoes traditionally used by Native Americans to travel up and down the Great Lakes of the US. Andy went over the basics with them before Johnny arrived to take them out on the water. Working in twos or threes they set sail and they too were soon paddling about confidently. However, there were a few near misses at the start which gave a few of them a bit of a fright! They too soon took off up the loch and they managed to canoe up the entire length of the loch to the point where the River Spey enters the loch. Johnny later said that they had canoed at least 2.5 miles over the two hour session.
Mrs Stephen’s group were being a little more active on the dry ski slope. They got kitted out with their ski boots and skis and spent quite a while trying to figure out how to manoeuvre themselves up the slope with these huge boots on and log skis! However, they were soon side stepping their way up the hill and one by one they all took it in turns to fall over! NO…. they really did well and a few of them showed some real promise and were soon carrying out some difficult technical moves such as the ‘pizza and chips’ and the ‘snow plough’! Before the end of the session a few of them were taking off from almost the top of the slope and were speeding down to the bottom with great gusto.
Before we knew it it was lunchtime and we all trudged back up the 69 steps to the hall to have our lunch and a short rest before session 2. Lunch was again sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, a biscuit and more juice!
In the afternoon Mrs Mitchell’s group were the groovy snowboarders and swapped the long thin skis for a shorter and broader board. Both feet are fixed on to the board and you bravely slide down the slope hoping not to fall and hurt yourself!
Mrs Stephen’s group went for a walk through the grounds and then headed out on the boat for a cruise round the loch. They were excited at the end of the session as it was their turn for the shop. However, Mr Jenkins was away in the woods with the group doing problem solving and they had to wait patiently until Mrs Mitchell could phone him to ask him to come down….as he had all the money!
Miss Ingram’s group went first to the archery area and then had great fun in the woods doing some problem solving exercises. The archery was great and after a little practice they were managing to hit the target regularly and scored some good scores! They were about 5 metres from the target and were amazed to learn that Olympic archers shoot over a distance of around 70 metres! After doing archery they set off for the woods to do some problem solving. They untangled them selves from a human knot and attempted to get their team through a spiders web without touching the ropes or using the same hole twice. Finally they spent 20 minutes blindfolded in a line with one hand on the shoulder of the person in front and one hand on a rope as they walked down a steep slope in the trees following the rope where ever it took them. They really enjoyed this and worked well as a team.
After a further trek back up the hill they had their juice, had a rest and then we were back down to the boathouse for tea. Today it was soup, pizza or sausage rolls (or both!!) with chips and salad. This went down well with everyone and then they had a chocolate, banana, cream and ice cream sundae for pudding! Feeling stuffed we went back up the hill to get our gear for the last activity of the day.
Mrs Stephen’s group went problem solving and Miss Ingram’s went skiing. These went well but one person did stave their thumb when they fell over at one point. After an ice pack she seemed to be fine and is hoping to be able to do all the activities tomorrow!
Mrs Mitchell’s group went mountain biking and had a great ride out to a small lochan a couple of miles out from the centre. Mr Jenkins went with them but returned with three of the children who either felt a little wheezy or were just too tired to carry on! I said I would catch them up once I got them back to the centre safely and left them watching the skiers! However, I followed the route and must have over taken them when they took a slight detour round the lochan and so spent the whole time cycling alone, with my ipod, looking for the group! (It was bliss really but don’t tell them that!) There is another cycle journey tomorrow so hopefully I won’t get separated again!
By the end of the evening we had a lot of tired children….. and staff. Some were feeling a little off colour and so we were planning an early night. Eventually, after one or two additional distractions they were ready for bed. We did try a little variation for the podcast with an attempt to sing a ‘round’ to brighten it up. Well, this proved trickier than expected and we obviously need more practice! Perhaps we will cancel the disco tomorrow to practice.
Anyway, the children are really enjoying the challenges they are facing and have mixed so well as a group and seem to be making new friends from the other school. We are looking forward to tomorrow and the last full day! It is now VERY LATE and I hope that this will make it easier for me to get a proper sleep tonight!
Watch out for tomorrows report on Friday morning.

Well, two days down and three to go. Another great day and the weather was almost ideal… although Mrs Stephen’s group may disagree as they had two water based activities and they had to have a lot of stamina and determination to do Canadian canoeing and siling in the same day.
We were up bright and early and I know that the boys from Strichen had to be woken up as they were all fast asleep when we knocked on their doors at 7am! We were all ready togo down to breakfast before eight and they were quite subdued at first bit they soon came to life after a brisk walk down to the boathouse. They had a choice of a lot of things for breakfast and everyone was able to get plenty to eat. As they had their breakfast they went out in groups to make their packed lunch. It would take too long to list all the things they had a choice of for making sandwiches. They also had a biscuit, a bag of crisps and fruit. After breakfast we went back up the steps to get the juice sorted out for them to take on their first activity.
Mrs Mitchell’s group went for a walk round the site and found out about some of the native plants and animals in the area before heading out on the loch for a cruise in a large boat. They enjoyed the chance to have a seat and used the binoculars to look at all the things they could see round the loch.
Mrs Stephen’s group went Canadian Canoeing in canoes like Native American’s would have used. This was a challenge but they had great fun. Miss Ingram’s group were ‘cool’ for the morning and turned their hand to snowboarding which is no easy activity!
Back up the hill to the hall for lunch before making our way back down for the afternoon activity. Mrs Mitchell’s group went skiing on the dry slope and after a hesitant start some of them were soon flying down the slope at great speeds. It highlighted the importance of learning how to stop or turn at the bottom of the slope as one or two required the padded fence to help them come to a halt! Mrs Stephen’s group ventured out sailing in two boats and were buffeted about the loch for a couple of hours. However, they came back smiling and disappeared back to their rooms for a shower afterwards to warm themselves up! Miss Ingram’s group went walking and then they too had a tour round the loch in the big boat!
Then came the opportunity for two groups to visit the shop. This allowed them to do their maths for the week as they feverishly went round the shop adding up the totals of what they wanted to buy to make sure they did not go over their £10 budget! If only I could get my wife to practice the same restraint!! So after 30minutes or so they had their bag of goodies and this meant having to listen to a chorus of ducks and other birds with the wooden ‘whistles’ a number of them had bought!
Soon it was time for tea and we were back down the hill again before 5pm. The menu was very popular today….. beef burgers in a bun and baked potatoes or vegetable kebabs and pitta bread. Some needed convincing to try either the mushroom or carrot and coriander soup – but most tucked in to the ice cream and jelly for pudding!
Back up the hill once again after tea and they had 20 minutes to get ready for their room inspection. After some frantic tidying up the rooms we checked were very good! It’s amazing what they can do when set a deadline – although we did not look too closely in the cupboards!
The evening activity was ‘games’ and we set off to the local shinty pitch with three instructors for games of rounders and shinty!! I bravely joined in with the rounders while the ladies had a nice walk round the park a few times! Everyone had great fun and soon it was time to pack p and return to the centre once again.
We allowed them some free time in their rooms before getting everyone together to do their diary and to get them some juice and a biscuit.
Everyone is now fast asleep (except me!!) and we are looking forward to another packed day tomorrow! Look out for tomorrow’s blog to se how we got on!
